Appendix 5: Version History
Table of Contents— Appendix 5: Version History
Like the rest of this site, All About Keuffel & Esser Rules is a living document. Rather than ask you to guess what’s changed since your last visit, this page tracks it. Major versions (2.0, 3.0, …) mark a full completed edition of the book. Minor versions (1.1, 1.2, …) mark the addition of a chapter, an appendix, or another substantial round of new content. Small corrections and polish are noted as changes within the version they occurred, rather than getting their own number.
Version 1.0 is the book as it existed on the original Weebly site before this migration began; everything since is the in-progress rebuild here on the new site. Version 2.0 is reserved for the day this rebuild reaches full parity with — and surpasses — that original: all seven chapters and every appendix complete and out of “under construction.”
Version 1.9 — July 18, 2026
- Added Appendix 3: A K&E Cursor Study, a chronological timeline of K&E’s cursor designs from the 1883 all-metal chisel indicator through the 1953 Unbreakable Indicator and the K12/GP-12 runner.
- Added Appendix 4: Bibliography, listing sources cited throughout the book.
- Added Appendix 1: A Study of K&E Cases — for now, a collected survey of case and box details already scattered across the chapters (leather grades, slip-case clips, box-jointed mahogany cases, government/institutional cases, and case-as-dating-tool), pending a fuller dedicated study.
- Fixed the in-article table of contents (
KeTableOfContents.astro), which was missing a link to this Appendix 5. - With this, every chapter and appendix now has real content — though Appendix 1’s case study and Appendix 3’s cursor timeline are both flagged in-page as starting points rather than finished research, so Version 2.0 is still being held back for that deeper pass.
Version 1.8 — July 18, 2026
- Added Appendix 2: A Study of K&E Product Catalogs, covering the 1881 debut catalog, the company’s growth from a Nassau Street storefront to the Hoboken and Fulton Street facilities, catalog edition/timeline conventions, Clark McCoy’s catalog reference resource, and a gallery of catalog covers across the decades.
Version 1.7 — July 18, 2026
- Added Chapter 7: My Portfolio of K&E Slide Rules, a category-by-category catalog of rules in the author’s own collection, each entry expanding in place to show a photo, write-up, and recorded stats (scale length, purpose, material, dates/serials, front/rear scale sets) where available, or an honest placeholder where not. Covers 57 rules; the author’s full collection is larger, so expect this catalog to keep growing.
Version 1.6 — July 18, 2026
- Added Chapter 6: Out of Catalog, Custom Rules, covering the D4053-3 Government-Issue Rule, Model 4108 Military Rule, Model 4110 Power Trig (“Annapolis Rule”), Belleville Spring Washer Computor, Brick-O-Meter, the K&E Chemco and Dr. Prince Refracting Rule (American Optical), and a run of rare custom-industry rules known only by name.
Version 1.5 — July 18, 2026
- Added Chapter 5: Miscellaneous K&E Rules, covering the Cylindrical and Circular Rules (Thacher, Fuller, Charpentier), Pocket Watch Rules (the Boucher Calculator and its Chatelain/Calculigraphe rivals), Rare Linear Rules (the Triangular Metal Rule and Universal Rule), and Mechanical Calculators/Charts categories.
Version 1.4 — July 17, 2026
- Added Chapter 4: The Specialty Rules, covering the Merchant’s, Stadia, Chemical, Steam Power, Radio and Electrical, Sector, and Demonstration families.
Version 1.3 — July 17, 2026
- Added Chapter 3: Rules of the Double-Sided, Duplex-Type, covering the Original Duplex, Polyphase Duplex, Log Log Duplex, Log Log Vector Duplex, and Modern Duplex families.
- Repositioned the Model 4181-1 close-up art shot as an uncaptioned inline image leading its section.
Version 1.2 — July 16, 2026
- Added Chapter 2: Rules of the Single-Sided, Mannheim-Type.
Version 1.1 — July 16, 2026
- Migration to the new site begins: landing page and Chapter 1 (Understandings and Conventions) rebuilt here.
Version 1.0 — prior to migration
- The complete book as it existed on the original Weebly site, last dated April 18, 2026 in the author’s note.
